The study focuses on the organ culture in the city of Nitra, briefly presenting important organists and organ-builders working in the territory of the city and paying attention to the existing organ festivals of the town. The contribution presents eight most important pipe organs of the city of Nitra from the historical, constructional and acoustic-aesthetic viewpoints. The organs are situated in these sacred buildings: St. Emmeram’s Cathedral, Church of St. Peter and Paul, Church of St. Ladislav, Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Church of the Reformed Christian Church, Holy Spirit Lutheran Church and Church of St. Urban on Zobor. For each instrument we offer historical circumstances of the development of the building and reconstruction of the particular organ, the current technical condition, description and disposition of the instrument supplemented with photo-documentation.

Organ as a “royal instrument” has a special position among the musical instruments. Its history in Slovakia began in the 14^th century. In the course of six centuries a number of organs were built in our territory. Many of them do not exist any more, and lots of historical instruments are neglected and ended up in inferior conditions. However, in the 21^st century some new organs have been built. The study deals with selected newly-built organs in the Western Slovakia, with a special focus on the three most important of them – the organ in the Concert Hall of the Slovak Philharmonic in Bratislava, in St. Martin’s Cathedral in Bratislava and in St. Emmeram’s Cathedral in Nitra. The other organs are analysed to a smaller extent.
For any particular organ we offer the description of the space in which the instrument is built, the history of preceding organs on the site, if any, history of the organ building company, the visual aspect, technical and acoustic solutions, disposition and finally the present state of the instrument and its utilization.
The study offers a survey of hitherto unpublished information about particular newly-built 21^st-cenutry organs in Western Slovakia.
